PHRMA Wins Pinnacle Award from SHRM for Exceptional HR Program


PORTLAND, OR— PHRMA has won a Pinnacle Award from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the highest honor given to SHRM state councils and chapters for notable contributions to the human resource profession. 

Created in 1991, the award is the most prestigious achievement SHRM state councils and chapters can attain, and it honors programs that exceed the standard activities of SHRM local networks in enhancing the creation of effective HR management. PHRMA was one of 12 human resource organizations from across the country to win the award. 

PHRMA’s Chapter Director, Nikki Schutte, SHRM-CP says “This is a huge honor and one that could not have happened without the unwavering dedication of your PHRMA board and their extreme passion for truly making PHRMA your go-to place for everything networking, professional development and education.”


Over the years, we have seen a decline in member engagement as our monthly programs and other event attendance has been steadily decreasing. Through surveying members, we found a variety of external factors were contributing to this decrease. One of which being the growth of businesses in the suburbs and the traffic to get to and from the city. In response, we developed an easy, replicable way to live stream our monthly programs to satellite locations across the city.

Overview of initiative:

  •  Supporting SHRM and the local chapter: With the recent update to the self-paced learning requirements for recertification, this new way of providing monthly programs to our members will be imperative to support our members in obtaining their SHRM recertification credits through the local chapter all while still offering members the member-to-member networking they seek through local chapters.
  •  Meeting member’s needs: This initiative is in direct response to feedback from our members about their inability to attend our monthly programs’ location.
  •  Fostering member engagement, retention and acquisition: This initiative has allowed us to engage members’ who normally cannot attend our monthly programs and has led to a 19% increase in our monthly programs! In addition, we have acquired 23% more new members this year compared to last year! 

The award was presented on Friday, Nov. 16, during SHRM’s national Volunteer Leaders’ Summit held in suburban Washington, D.C. Representatives of PHRMA, Chapter Director Nikki Schutte, SHRM-CP and 2019 President Dawn Bergin, SHRM-SCP attended the summit. 

“These chapters and state councils embody what it means to be HR leaders,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and CEO of SHRM. “They are tackling some of the highest-profile and relevant HR issues today and doing it at a local level. Some of this year’s winners included programs on combating the skills shortage, employing untapped talent pools such as veterans and those with mental illness, and raising awareness on handling sexual harassment in the workplace.” 

Winning programs, selected from over 80 applications, received a $1,000 prize given by award sponsor, Paychex Inc.

6.     LakeNormanHR (N.C.) – “Partnering with Duke Energy to meet their HR employee development needs and increase engagement”

7.     Human Resources Association of Central Ohio – “Hanging with the Young Professionals”

8.     Oklahoma State Council for Human Resource Management – “OKHR in Indian Country Conference”

9.     Portland HR Management Association (Ore.) – “Cultivating Member Engagement, Retention and New Member Acquisition with Livestreaming and Satellite Locations”

10.  Greater Valley Forge Human Resource Association (Pa.) – “Supporting Local Veterans”

11.  Greenville SHRM (S.C.) – “Decoding the Mystery of Disability Employment/Rethinking the Ideal Employee”
