Intercultural Communications for Leadership

Presented by: Kristen Wong, PHR, SHRM-CP and Riika Salonen

Attendees will increase their HR professional skills and knowledge in developing and delivering a cultural competency leadership program which supports and sustains positive behaviors that facilitates inclusion between all employees. Participants will learn about OHSU’s Leadership program “Intercultural Communications for Leadership”, key concepts in designing an intercultural communications learning program for leaders, the challenges of implementation, and how to sustain a program over time. The session will include a facilitated activity from OHSU’s program and instruction on how to use the activity and follow up discussion as a teaching tool. Finally, participants will learn how integrate a program into their own organizations including how to share ROI with senior leaders.


You will learn:

1. Knowledge of the major concepts of designing an intercultural communications learning program for leaders.

2. Recognition of the benefits and challenges when implementing an intercultural communications leadership program.

3. How to sustain a program and further integrate the fundamental learnings and behaviors into an organization.


Presenter Biography:

Kristen Wong is a Senior Human Resources Business Partner at Oregon Health & Science University where she acts as an advisor and consultant to managers of all levels of the organization, supporting them in making decisions that are in the best interest of the organization and with individual needs in consideration. Kristen leads a human resources bargaining team, participates in arbitration cases, and guides managers through challenging employee relations issues up to termination.  Kristen facilitates and trains managers and groups of employees on a wide variety of topics that include supervisory best practices and cultural competency. Kristen is the author of “Global Coaching: HR’s Value Contribution to the Real World” (Global HR Practitioner Handbook, Vol. 4, 2018) Kristen earned her Bachelor of Arts from University of CA at Davis, holds both a PHR and SHRM-CP certification, and is a Certified Group Fitness Instructor from the American Council on Exercise and Certified YogaFit Instructor.


Riikka Salonen is the Program Manager of Diversity Talent Acquisition at OHSU. Riikka leads diversity recruitment, outreach and diversity talent development initiatives, aiming to increase people of color, immigrants and refugees, women, people with disabilities, veterans and LGBTQ community members in OHSU’s workforce. In addition, she has designed and facilitated hundreds of workshops related to culturally-responsive leadership, diversity and inclusion strategic planning, diversity talent acquisition, cultural competence in patient care, multicultural customer service and intercultural communication across the globe. Riikka and Kristen, in a partnership with their OHSU colleagues, have offered Intercultural Communication for Leaders workshops (Levels 1 & 2 and Booster Sessions) to more than 200 OHSU leaders since 2015. Riikka received her graduate degree in intercultural relations, organizational and speech communications from University of Jyväskylä, Finland. She has also completed the Professional Intercultural Certificate Program through Intercultural Communication Institute.
