When you ask a CEO what she or he sees as the biggest challenges for their business, hiring and retaining talent is likely to be high on the list. With U.S. unemployment, less than 5 percent (the lowest in eight years), and employees showing less and less loyalty, the “war for talent” is being fought harder than ever.

 

In this “war”, new weapons are being used— and some of them are surprisingly successful. Since the emergence of “employer branding” concepts, companies have understood that some of the principles of consumer marketing should be used to market to current and future employees. This is where social media comes in.

 

It’s 2017 and everything is social: how you hear about breaking news, meeting your soulmate, choosing your next travel destination— and finding a job. Many are taking to the web to find new opportunities. Equipped with digital portfolios and resumes, the workforce is searching online job boards, and prospective employees are posting to their own social media to request information on opportunities.

 

However, many companies are not using their social channels to engage with potential employees. Aside from LinkedIn, which is solely dedicated to networking and recruiting, other channels like Facebook and Instagram are untapped markets for finding exceptional talent, and this is a space companies really should be capitalizing on.
