How to be an Internal Coach

In today’s hypercompetitive marketplace for quality talent, the cost of losing and replacing an employee can be up to three times their salary, once you factor in off-boarding, recruiting, onboarding and time it takes them to be fully integrated and productive.   Fact, companies can’t afford to lose people.  Coaching is a proven effective way to retain and nurture talent by providing support to help employees set goals and resolve conflicts and stresses.

Gain the trust and respect of employees who can see you as an advocate and guide in managing their careers and personal lives.  Learn from an experienced external coach how to be a great internal coach.  You’ll learn how to conduct two coaching conversations you can use right away to be an effective internal coach:

The Mountain:

  • Help an employee create an exciting and rewarding vision for what they can achieve in three years, both personally and professionally
  • Help employees set realistic, achievable goals
  • Help employees stay accountable and motivated to their goals
  • Demonstrate how to frame underperformance and management issues as barriers to their own success

The Sounding Board:

  • How to use silence, active listening and questions to empower employees to gain clarity on complex issues
  • Keeping yourself as a coach out of the solution-provider role
  • Teaching people to independent problem solvers and stronger communicators
  • Helping people gain greater self awareness and greater awareness of others

About the Speaker:

Leo MacLeod, coach, trainer, and pie maker, has been helping firms with leadership transition for eighteen years, with a focus on developing the next generation of leaders.  He runs the Emerging Leader Program and writes the “Learning to Lead” column for the Daily Journal of Commerce.  He speaks nationally on leadership development and emotional intelligence.  Former ad executive and marketer, Leo is the past president of the American Marketing Association and is active member of the Association for Talent Development.  He developed PSU Marketing Certificate program and has lectured at University of Washington, Portland State and University of Portland.
