January Monthly Luncheon & Workshop

Compassion fatigue? how it impacts you, your employees and your organization's bottom line

Presented by: Seth Vredenburg, Banfield Pet Hospital

Compassion fatigue is a hot topic in the human, mental, and health care professions and can affect anyone who is in a position to help others. It has a huge impact on individuals as well as an organization. As HR professionals you are prone to compassion fatigue yourself, impacting your ability to perform you job, or causing you discontentment in your current role. Compassion fatigue can also impact your organization in regards to increase absenteeism, workers compensation claims, and, if impacting enough associates, your overall organizational goals. I will share my story about how compassion fatigue happened to me as well as dive into the contributing factors that helped me understand the root cause. Our aim during the hour discussion is to provide you with an overview of what compassion fatigue is, how you might go about identifying it in others and ways to help reduce the chance of it happening to you and your organization. During the workshop we will complete a self-assessment to provide awareness to your organization’s current state of compassion satisfaction, as well as develop skills to help cope with rumination, moral stress, and emotional labor. While focusing on ourselves it can help us be more resilient, and we can have discussion about what artful questions you can ask those you support, improving the overall wellbeing of your organization.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Vredenburg is a 2010 graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He started working for Banfield Pet Hospital after graduation and quickly became a leader in his hospital and market, helping to onboard new associates as well as train paraprofessional staff at a new hospital location in New York City.

In 2012, Dr. Vredenburg relocated to Portland to take on the role of chief of staff, where he was responsible for not only patient care but also leading the hospital’s medical team and ensuring consistent quality care for pets. During this time, Dr. Vredenburg started to experience compassion fatigue, though—like many veterinarians—he was not aware of it at the time. He struggled through several years of highs and lows until he was diagnosed with stress-induced adrenal fatigue and advised to find a different job.

Luckily he was able to transition into a different role at Banfield as senior program manager on the learning and development team at Banfield’s corporate headquarters, where he has the opportunity to share his experiences and help others learn and grow in their role. Dr. Vredenburg has presented numerous times on the topic of compassion fatigue at such venues as the Colorado Power of Ten group, Student AVMA Conference, and his alma mater.

He recently completed training to become a certified compassion fatigue professional and is leading work for Banfield on how to improve associate wellbeing. Dr. Vredenburg’s passion has always been for the veterinary profession and he is excited about the opportunity to talk about Banfield’s wellness journey, raise awareness of compassion fatigue and share tools to help all veterinarians cope with a greatly rewarding but also very stressful career in veterinary medicine.
