We are thrilled to have Brian Keegan, Senior Director and a Human Resources Business Partner from Knowledge Learning Corporation leading our discussion. KLC began as Children’s Discover Centers in 1983 and in the next 20 years expanded to more than 700 community centers and 450 onsite school programs. In 2005, KLC joined forces with KinderCare Learning Centers, Inc. The KinderCare merger made KLC the nation’s largest private child care and education provider.

From the perspective of a senior human resources executive, Mr. Keegan will reflect on the challenges KLC has faced in the last few years, the challenges it is currently facing and the strategies the company has implemented for succeeding in this ever-changing environment.

Luncheon Topic: 2010 Year-End “To-Do” List for Employee Benefit Plans

Do you know what changes have occurred that will affect your Benefits Plans?

Tom will advise us of new developments, and help us identify top-priority items to address before year-end to avoid unexpected employee benefit plan liabilities. Tom’s sessions have been enjoyed locally by many as both educational, and yes, even funny…despite the topic!

Specific items may vary due to new developments, but may include the following:

· Pension and profit sharing plan amendments – what’s required and when

· Annual reporting requirements on Form 5500

· Reviewing vendor contracts – what to look for

· Dealing with underfunded multiemployer pension plans

· Contributions and distributions – timing issues

· Nonqualified deferred compensation plans (there are more than you think) – correcting documentation and operational errors

· Coping with health care reform – tax credits, mandated benefits and nondiscrimination rules

· Cafeteria plans – new opportunities and requirements

About the speaker: Tom Kramer, a shareholder in the firm, has represented employers who sponsor employee benefit plans, service providers who consult with such employers regarding their plans, and insurance and banking institutions that provide funding to employers with respect to their plans.

Tom's practice covers both tax-qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, including pension, profit sharing and other deferred compensation plans.

Tom also advises regarding health and welfare benefit plans. The health plans he works with include; medical, dental, vision, prescription-drug, employee-assistance and executive medical reimbursement plans, as well as cafeteria plans, voluntary employees' beneficiary associations, medical savings accounts, healthcare reimbursement arrangements and health savings accounts. Tom also works with other welfare benefit plans, including dependent care assistance plans, educational assistance plans, adoption assistance plans, disability plans, life insurance plans and severance pay plans. Tom's practice includes plan drafting, problem solving and representing employers and others in disputes with regulators, such as the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Labor, Oregon Insurance Division and Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries.

Tom has written and spoken frequently about benefits issues. He is the co-author of Employee Health Benefits and Health Insurance and Health Plans, for the Oregon State Bar, and Welfare Benefits under the Tax Reform Act of 1986 for the American Law Institute–American Bar Association.

Short Description of the Event: While it is impossible to eliminate the risks of substance abusing employees, this session will help businesses reduce or contain those risks and avoid litigation. Supervisors will learning the simple straightforward steps to take to manage a difficult on-the-job situation and prevent a crisis. The training includes video examples and exercises to learn effective intervention strategies and a manual with tools for easy reference.
